Basal Cell Cancer, Squamous Cell Cancer, Actinic Keratosis in Maryland

Definition/Diagnosis

If you have spent a lot of time outdoors over the years, whether sun-bathing, playing golf, gardening, farming, horseback-riding or just about any outdoor activity under the sun, and did not always protect yourself with a high-numbered SPF sunscreen, chances are you are now looking at the cumulative effects of sun-damage to your skin. While you might have enjoyed the tanned look on your skin over the years, now you may be looking at persistent rough scaly spots, blotchy skin pigmentation, sores that won’t heal or bleed, leather-like skin and wrinkles that make you look old and tired.

Most sores on the face usually heal within a couple of weeks, but if you notice a persistent sore that occasionally bleeds or won’t heal after four weeks, there is a very good chance you may have developed a skin cancer such as a basal cell cancer (a slow-growing skin cancer), or a squamous cell cancer (a more rapidly growing skin cancer usually with more severe potential for spreading or metastasizing). You should be seen as soon as possible because either of these conditions continue to get worse over weeks to months, cause local destruction to your skin, ulcerate, continue to spread and sometimes can metastasize to other body areas and become fatal.

Those persistent scaly red spots on your face, neck and arms that feel like rough, gritty sandpaper that come and go could very well be pre-cancerous growths called actinic keratoses.

Dr. Snyder’s Approach and Treatment

The real problem is that over months to years, if left untreated, anywhere from 5-20 percent of these could develop into a potentially deadly skin cancer called a squamous cell cancer. If left untreated, a squamous cell cancer can spread or metastasize to other body areas and could become fatal.

This is why it is so important to have routine, regularly scheduled visits with a board certified dermatologist, like Dr. Steven Snyder, who is uniquely qualified to recognize a pre-cancerous skin growth or cancerous growth when either is in a very early stage of growth, with the potential to be completely curable. As a board certified dermatologist, Dr. Steven Snyder is highly trained and specialized in recognizing these pre-cancerous and cancerous growths in their earliest stages and will provide the latest, safest and most effective treatment for you as well as placing you on an appropriately scheduled follow-up examination plan .

At the time of your consultation and examination, Dr. Snyder will evaluate your skin and recommend and provide a treatment plan that is tailor-made for your condition or conditions. Treatments may include topical prescription medications, cryosurgical treatments, photodynamic therapy, skin biopsies or surgical excisions or electrosurgical treatments along with the judicious use of appropriate sunscreens suited to your specific skin type, and the recommendation of sun-avoidance using appropriately effective sun-protective clothing.
